‘You racist bastard’: Wesley Snipes nearly killed ‘Blade: Trinity’ director over ‘Garbage’ shirt

While there have been plenty of vampire thrillers over the years, very few have managed to garner the genre a cult following after Wesley Snipes headlining the Blade franchise. However, as fun as watching the movies, it turns out, filming was just as difficult, if not more difficult. The reason for this is a vicious feud between director David S. According to the cast of Blade: Trinity, Snipes rarely interacted or even came on set for filming. Only appearing for his close-ups, he left most of the filming to his body double, as he spent the days in his trailer smoking weed. Snipes co-star in the film Patton Oswalt went into a bit more detail about the incident in an interview, recalling,

“I remember one day on set they let everyone choose their own clothes, there was a black actor who was also kind of a club kid. And he wore this shirt with the word “Garbage” on it in big, stylish letters. It was his shirt.

However, Snipes seems to have misinterpreted the situation as Goyer forced him to wear this shirt, which ruffled him the wrong way. Oswalt continued,

“He [Wesley Snipes] back and forth, “There’s only one other black guy in the movie, and you make him wear a shirt that says ‘Garbage?’ You racist motherfucker, and he tried to strangle the director, David Goyer.

As the situation escalates very quickly without anyone having a clue what is going on, things become extremely tense. As a result, Goyer reportedly enlisted the help of a group of bikers frequenting a nearby bar to come with him to the set and act as his bodyguards the following day.

However, instead of calming the situation, it kind of poured oil on the fire and led to another conversation between David Goyer and Snipes which eventually ended up with them communicating only through post-it notes. for the rest of the shoot. Snipes himself confirmed the story in an interview years later.

Most of the cast members claimed that Snipes stayed in character throughout filming, including Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel, and, of course, Patton Oswalt. The comedian also noted that he actually never met Wesley Snipes, as the only time they had to film together, since Snipes’ scenes were being done by his double, Snipes responded to his greeting with, ” I am Blade”.

Vampire Danika Talos actress Parker Posey once commented on the situation that everyone had a lot of fun shooting the movie except for Snipes. She added: “I came here to do something fun, stupid and big budget and I don’t normally do that kind of stuff. So I just show up, say my lines, having fun with it. And Wesley isn’t.” In fact, his experience was bad enough that he sued.

Wesley Snipes sued David S. Goyer

Wesley Snipes filed a lawsuit against New Line Cinema, executive producer Toby Emmerich and David Goyer in 2005. In this, he gave his version of the story which differed wildly from the others. Although his main concern with the film is its “childish humor”, there seems to be more to the story.

However, nothing ever came out of the $5 million lawsuit, and it looks like Snipes has let go of the past as well. It’s worth mentioning that Snipes has had his fair share of run-ins with the law over the years, ranging from a high-speed chase to 3 years in jail for tax evasion. However, with the Marvel’s Blade reboot currently in pre-production, aside from getting excited, fans are hoping the franchise won’t face the same situation again.
