The identity of the so-called royal racist came closer to being revealed over the weekend, after a Daily Telegraph report said Meghan Markle and then-Prince Charles wrote to each other to identify the person, who was an elderly person. member of the royal family, during their letters.

The controversy dates back to Meghan and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which Meghan and Harry described the traumatic hardships they faced which ultimately prompted them to leave the Royal Family. The most explosive of the allegations was the claim that concerns had been raised during several conversations with Harry about being dark. [Archies] the skin could be when he was born.

Harry and Meghan gave Oprah notably different accounts of what was said and when, but they both declined to identify who they believe made the comment. They later clarified that it was not Queen Elizabeth or her husband Prince Philip who was to blame.

The controversy prompted a rare response from the Queen, who memorably said: The whole family is saddened to hear how difficult the past few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Although some memories may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family in private.

The allegations were so incredibly serious that it seemed possible, just for a moment, that they could rock the royal family to its foundations.

The fact that the family was able to survive the revelation was partly thanks to Harry and Meghans telling who said what was vague and contradictory, and also, of course, that they didn’t land a fatal blow in naming the individual.

The couple also later backed down from accusing the Royal Family of outright racism, recasting the discussion on unconscious bias.

In an interview with British TV presenter Tom Bradby for his memoir, published four months after Elizabeth’s death, Harry explicitly refuted suggestions that the Royal Family were racist.

Has Meghan ever mentioned being racist? he said.

She said there were some disturbing comments about Archies’ skin color, Bradby replied.

Once it has been recognized, or pointed out to you as an individual or as an institution, that you have unconscious biases, then you have the opportunity to learn and grow from that…

Prince Harry

Harry said: That there were concerns about his skin color.

Bradby said: Okay, wouldn’t you describe that as essentially racist?

Harry answered: I wouldn’t, not having lived with this family.

Harry added: The difference between racism and unconscious bias, the two things are different. But once it’s been acknowledged, or pointed out to you as an individual or as an institution, that you have unconscious biases, then you have the opportunity to learn and grow from that in order to make part of the solution rather than being part of the problem.

The issue has, of course, continued to simmer in the background, although most would say the royals have managed to move on. As a friend of the Kings told The Daily Beast: The Queen tried to keep calm and carry on, and Charles is taking the same approach.

But he burst onto the royal horizon, just two weeks before the new king’s coronation, via the Telegraph’s detailed report on letters exchanged by Meghan and Charles discussing the matter.

The Telegraph explicitly claimed that Meghan sought to highlight her concerns about unconscious bias in her letter to the King, the Telegraph claimed, adding that she never intended to specifically accuse the person of being racist, but raised concerns about unconscious bias.

The Sussex camp denied suggestions they leaked the information, and Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter.

What seems likely, however, is that more and more people now know exactly who Meghan and Harry are said to have had conversations with them about the likely skin color of her unborn child. This in turn increases the likelihood that, eventually, the person who made the remark will be identified.

Curiously, the Telegraph went so far as to identify them as an eldest member of the family, a claim that remains in the published article. Shortly after the allegation was first made, a Buckingham Palace insider angrily slammed this reporter in a confidential chat for suggesting the person who made the comment was a senior member of the family. , as had been suggested to us by several sources.

Buckingham Palace declined to respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast, but the idea that a senior official made the comment appears to be becoming an accepted part of the narrative.

So who could it be?

Well, at some point in the past few years, every prominent member of the family has been named by this reporter, in private conversations and journalistic gossip, as the complexion inquisitor of the royal family.

Prince Charles as he then was was one of the very first to be publicly named, by writer Christopher Andersen, who said Charles made a comment thinking about the likely skin color of their children as he ate breakfast with his wife, Camilla, in front of the footmen and other servants.

Of course, that doesn’t quite square with Meghan’s claim that there were multiple conversations about it, but Meghan’s version of events that says the conversations took place with Harry who then passed them on to his conflict with Harry’s account of who spoke to him and when.

Harry seemed to suggest it was all one conversation and took place at the very start of their relationship, before they were married, and not when Meghan was pregnant.

Camilla has often been mooted as a possible suspect, although friends of the Queen told The Daily Beast they thought it highly unlikely she made such a comment. It’s unthinkable, a friend told the Daily Beast.

Princess Anne, who is rumored not to have been a big fan of the wedding, was also mentioned as a suspect. Largely, however, this appears to be based on his reputation for being outspoken and his perceived general coolness towards Meghan, rather than specific knowledge of something she may or may not have said.

William, of course, also came under suspicion in this messy game of Clue. In recent months, speculation has intensified due to the extreme way in which he was attacked in Harry’s book, Spare, which did not repeat or clarify the allegation made to Oprah.

We know he advised Harry to pause and think before marrying Meghan, warning him not to rush into marrying someone the family didn’t know.

William is also alleged, by Harry, to have raised an eyebrow at Meghan’s nationality. In Spare, Harry says that when he told William he wanted to marry Meghan, William told him to slow down, adding that she is an American actress after all, Harold. Everything can happen.

In the book Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie wrote that Harry detected snobby overtones when William urged him to think carefully about marrying this girl.

William is the only family member to have specifically reacted to the allegations, telling a crowd of reporters shortly after the interview aired, We really aren’t a racist family.

Of course, William is the only family member to specifically react to the allegations, telling a crowd of reporters shortly after the interview aired, We really aren’t a racist family.

And that pretty much sums up the attitude of William’s friends who say he would never have made such a remark. It’s all just a refinement, if you will, of memories that can vary.

Historically, the Windsors have issues of racism to address. From Prince Philips’ unenviable record of racist jokes to Lady Susan Hussey’s interrogation of a black charity CEO to Princess Michael of Kent’s racially offensive taste in Victorian brooches, you don’t have you don’t have to go far to find blatant expressions of overt, let alone unconscious bias.

King Charles is expected to announce an inquiry into the family’s ties to the slave trade soon after his coronation on May 6, but anyone with half an eye on how the cultural wind was blowing, let alone of a sense of natural justice and a desire to lead from the front on ethical issues, would have done so years ago.

Meghan has categorically denied that her non-attendance at the coronation was linked to letters sent between her and Charles two years ago, but few would blame her if the family’s failure to confront their racist heritage had contributed to her decision.

In a bonus chapter added to a later paperback edition of Finding Freedom, anonymous sources close to the couple suggested the Sussexes felt the Royal Family had steadfastly failed to address their concerns satisfactorily.

The book said: The Queen’s memories may vary. The comment did not go unnoticed by the couple, who, according to a close source, were not surprised that full ownership had not been taken. Months later and little accountability has been taken, added a friend of Meghan’s. How can you move forward with this?

In the end, we don’t know exactly who said what to Harry or when. But locking eyes with the person who wanted to know the color of her baby’s skin is obviously not something Meghan has planned for the weekend of May 6. The question Buckingham Palace needs to ask is whether they are properly prepared for what is to come. if I do when that person is finally unmasked.
