Indian lawmakers have expressed fury over a cartoon in a German magazine that has been criticized as racist. The Der Spiegel sketch shows a caption saying population: India overtakes China. Below, two trains representing the two countries run in parallel. The Chinese train is depicted as a modern high-speed train carrying two people while the Indian train is interpreted as crowded and old-fashioned with people sitting and standing on the carriages. Germany is outrageously racist, tweeted Kanchan Gupta, senior adviser to India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Der Spiegel caricaturing India in this way has nothing to do with reality. The goal is to show India and suck in China. Gupta said it was as bad, if not worse, than a widely condemned 2014 cartoon in The New York Times mocking the Indias Mars mission. India’s Minister of Electronics, Information and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, also criticized the cartoon, saying that in a few years India’s economy will be bigger than Germany’s.
