Yorkshire set to find out penalties following Azeem Rafiq racism scandal

Yorkshire are set to find out next week what punitive action will be taken against them after they accepted four amended charges of discrediting the game in the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.

The club did not contest the charges, including failing to address the use of racist and/or discriminatory language over an extended period, at the Cricket Disciplinary Committee hearing of the month last.

Penalties range from a points deduction in the County Championship, One Day Cup and T20 Blast to a fine, with a penalty hearing to be held next Wednesday, according to the PA news agency.

Gary Ballance also admitted to using racist and/or discriminatory language ahead of the hearing, but he announced his retirement from cricket last week after moving to his native Zimbabwe.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has brought charges against six other former Yorkshire players Michael Vaughan, Tim Bresnan, Matthew Hoggard, Andrew Gale, Richard Pyrah and John Blain.

Vaughan was cleared on a balance of probabilities of using racist language toward Rafiq, but the other five were found guilty of using racist and/or discriminatory language by the CDC panel.

Only Vaughan appeared at the public hearing to testify before the CDC panel, chaired by Tim OGorman, with Bresnan, Hoggard, Gale, Pyrah and Blain opting out of the process.

Some of the people can appeal the guilty verdicts, but their sentences, alongside those of Yorkshire and Ballance, are due next week.
