New York Times reporter and CNN analyst Maggie Haberman said the civil case brought by a woman who claims Donald Trump sexually assaulted her worries him because of the seriousness of the charge.
Writer E. Jean. Carroll claims Trump raped her in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan in 1995 or 1996. The trial began Tuesday in New York. Trump did not attend, as his presence is not required in the civil proceedings.
The former president vehemently denies the allegation. He also mocked her on his Truth Social platform, calling her Miss Bergdorf Goodman, which earned her lawyers a reprimand from the judge during the trial.
How concerned is Donald Trump about this case? Michael Smerconish asked Haberman on CNN Primetime Thursdays.
She answered:
Everyone I’ve spoken to says that Trump is personally very embarrassed by this case because, you know, it’s a rape allegation. It’s not a criminal case. It is not a filler. But it’s a very, very serious allegation and he knows it, and it bothers him. It bothers him a lot. I think he knows he got himself into trouble by attacking her on his social media site. It was just useless for her case. Now, does that mean he’s going to talk about it? Not necessarily. But behind the scenes, he makes it very clear how he feels and it’s not positive.
The judge’s case reprimanded one of Trump’s attorneys during Thursday’s trial.
At times during cross-examination, Mr. [Joe] Tacopina’s approach led to reprimands from Federal District Court Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, The New York Times reported. Come on, Mr. Tacopina, the judge said at one point, later repeating that the lawyers’ questions were argumentative.
