The new Kano State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mohammad Gumel, has declared himself ready to serve with a high sense of responsibility and zeal, as well as welcoming constructive criticism.
Appreciating the complexity of the state’s security architecture, Gumel said he sees its deployment in the state as an asset in principle rather than a challenge.
Gumel, who officially took office as the CP of Kano, spoke yesterday while addressing senior police officers at the Police Officers’ Mess, Bompai, Kano. Prior to his full assignment, Gumel was redeployed from Sokoto State to Kano to oversee recent supplementary elections in 16 local councils in the state. He promised to ensure an adequate and regular welfare program for officers and commanding men but urged them to show professionalism in policing the state.
The new police chief appealed for the support of the people, emphasizing: The police cannot tackle crime and the root of emerging crimes in isolation, without the active support and collaboration of the people.
I am aware that the good people of Kano are known to be politically aware and active. Therefore, as far as I know, anything the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) does in this state will always be in the limelight and attract public attention.
This, instead of being a challenge, is, for me, an asset in principle. Please believe me that under my watch the State Police will welcome constructive criticism, be willing to accept responsibility for addressing all real issues and emerging challenges, and work with communities to provide the remedies. needed to address any gaps that continue to arise.
According to him, the commands of policing activities should be a collective research, as it must continuously work through communities to ensure the security of the state.
His words: For my part, I will be committed to addressing these issues with the high standards of performance for which the Nigerian Police is known nationally and internationally.
I have learned over the years that it is desirable that all police officers always demonstrate professionalism in the performance of their duties. This makes the police institution more respected and their actions acceptable to the community.
Gumel promised to work with sister state security agencies. My vision is to lead police command transparently and build it on community partnership with robust intelligence gathering, using the right technology, and to lead police that respect human rights and fundamental freedoms .
