Harry Garside flatly denies DV’s allegations against his ex-girlfriend

Boxer Harry Garside has described how he was taken completely by surprise when he got off a plane in Sydney on Tuesday after taking part in Im A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! and accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Garside responded to the domestic violence allegations on Wednesday with a statement on social media, in which he also said he was taken “completely by surprise” by the media at Sydney Airport on Tuesday.

The Olympic medalist was arrested on arrival at Sydney Airport from Johannesburg on Tuesday after coming second on the reality show I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

“The conduct of the police in the presence of the media at Sydney International Airport yesterday took me completely by surprise,” Mr Garside wrote in an Instagram post.

“I categorically deny the allegations of violence and dispute the account given to the police. I have nothing to hide and I will defend myself against the prosecution. The police have not been informed of all the facts and I am confident that my reputation will be vindicated through the legal process. As the case is before the courts, I will say no more.

Garside reportedly stayed at his family’s home on the outskirts of Melbourne on Wednesday.

Reach Foundation, the charity portrayed by Garside on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, also released a statement on social media on Wednesday afternoon.

“We are aware of an allegation made against Reach Ambassador Harry Garside,” their Instagram post read.

“We have no further information beyond what has been reported, and as this is an ongoing investigation, we will not comment further at this stage. Reach, as an organization, defends respect and safety for all.

Reach’s statement came shortly after Garside was posted on social media, although the organization initially declined The Daily Telegraph’s request for comment.

On Tuesday evenings, the I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here! runner-up, was still holding the Akubra he wore on the show as he left Mascot Police Station in Sydney after being released on bail.

He then said he had felt “shocked” by what had happened since he landed in Sydney around 2pm.

“It’s quite confronting,” he said of his airport arrest. “Yeah kinda sad.”

The assault charge against Garside relates to allegations that the boxer was violent towards his ex-girlfriend Ashley Ruscoe in March.

Ms Ruscoe has given The Daily Telegraph permission to identify him.

The Daily Telegraph was told Ms Ruscoe spoke to police on several occasions in the weeks following the alleged incident, but detectives had to wait until he was back in the country to speak to the boxer.

Police will allege Garside spat in Ms Ruscoe’s face and elbowed her in the head during a domestic argument at her flat in the eastern suburbs. It will further be alleged that there was a physical fight over a cell phone. The alleged incident is believed to have taken place after the couple broke up and Mr Garside went to Ms Ruscoe’s flat to collect her belongings.

Garsides posts on social media how happy he is to be upgraded to business class on his flight back to Australia.

NSW Police issued a statement yesterday which read: ‘Last month officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command opened an investigation into reports of a suspected domestic violence incident in Bellevue Hill on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.”

“Following enquiries, a 25-year-old man was arrested at Sydney International Airport at around 2.40pm today. He was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with common assault (DV). He was released on bail to appear in Downing Center Local Court on Wednesday, May 24, 2023.”

Garside clearly did not expect the ride home he received. Hours earlier, Garside shared a photo on Instagram in Qantas business class after boarding the flight to Johannesburg with his father.

“I had to upgrade my best friend to do business with me,” he wrote.

“It’s the first time he’s flown. Money comes and goes, memories with loved ones last forever (black heart emoji). What an experience it has been. Something I will never forget, friendships that will last a lifetime. A big thank you to everyone who supported me, I can’t believe I got this far in the show. I can’t wait to land again in the best country in the world. Embark on Paris 2024.”

The caption included a gold medal and an Australian flag emoji with the hashtag #chasinggreatness.

Garside’s father, Shaun, with whom he traveled on the flight to Sydney, was seen leaving Sydney Airport solo on Tuesday afternoon with extra luggage which belonged to his son.

Garside has spent the past few weeks appearing on the Channel 10 reality show I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! and placed second overall behind netball champion Liz Ellis.

Ms. Ruscoe is a wellness instructor and personal trainer. She took part in another reality show Ten, Amazing Race Australia with her former partner Sidney Pierucci.

Garside won a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in the men’s lightweight event.

While in South Africa, but before filming for I’m A Celebrity began, Garside told the Daily Telegraph he would take time in the jungle to figure out what he would do with his career in the future. .

“To be honest, I’m undecided and hopefully the jungle will be where I can explore it a bit more with all the free time,” Garside told The Daily Telegraph of his future career options at the time.

“I really hope that by then I have some answers about where I would like to walk in regards to boxing and the future of my life.”

He said he was considering three career options.

“There’s professional boxing, settling down for life, winning a world title and making lots of money,” he explained.

“Then there is amateur boxing, honor and pride, Australia have never won an Olympic gold medal and I would love to be the first. And then also, potentially giving up boxing altogether and starting a family or focusing on a business or whatever.

“Those are the three options, personally my heart and love is still in boxing so I think option three is probably not really an option but it still has to be on the cards I guess.”

At the time, Garside said he was “single” after splitting from Ruscoe.

He participated in the reality show for his chosen charity, the youth organization Reach.

Tuesday’s news comes as the boxer’s former manager Peter Mitrevski sent a libel suit to Garside over comments he made during the season of I’m A Celebrity.

Mr. Mitrevski said the comments were highly offensive and inaccurate.
