Saratoga Springs apologizes for its racist past

A new panel will look at redressing the wrongs of racism in Saratoga Springs.

The city passed a controversial resolution at its Tuesday night meeting. The meeting ended soon after, with people shouting at each other.

The resolution apologizes for the city’s history of racism, including in the police.

The resolution says its goal is to acknowledge, apologize and review the city’s racist past and establish a panel to start a conversation. This is part of the recommendations made by the Post-2020 Police Reform Task Force.

Among the assertions, the apology of racism in the police.

The resolution was adopted almost unanimously. The only no came from Public Safety Commissioner Jim Montagnino.

The city sees the resolution and the panel as a necessary step to healing. Mayor Ron Kim pointed out that the city’s police department is under investigation by the attorney general’s office for its treatment of Black Lives Matter protesters. However, the apology creates further division between people and the police, Montagnino said.

For me, the reconciliation recommendation is, I think, an important part of moving forward and basically discussing the things that happened not just in Saratoga Springs but across our country, Kim said.

We have members of our police department running in the direction of the shots, risking their lives to keep the city a safe place – and calling them all racists with the stroke of a pen is wrong on so many levels, Montagnino said.

The apology was just one of the post-2020 recommendations that Kim plans to implement. The City Council meeting that ended Tuesday evening will continue Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Saratoga Black Lives Matter founder Lexis Figuereo is happy with the resolution, but he and others at the meeting want action on what’s happening right now.
