Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has linked his recent battle with depression to the murderous 2022 campaign in which he won high office.

The former Pennsylvania lieutenant governor checked into Walter Reed Medical Center in February to receive treatment for the disease following a medical condition.

He was released on March 31 and returned to the Senate weeks later.

This was after the brutality of the campaign, Fetterman told KDKA-TV this week the root of his recent mental health issues. Some people think it was one of the most vicious political campaigns.

Fetterman suffered a stroke days before his May 2022 win in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary.

While his supporters insisted he was fit to serve, his speech impairment and auditory processing problems caused Republicans led by Fettermans opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz to argue otherwise.

Fetterman refused to blame Oz directly for his mental health issues after his own campaign ridiculed the doctor as an out-of-touch porter.

But after his win, Fetterman said, he realized he wasn’t himself.

I wasn’t the kind of senator Pennsylvania deserved. I wasn’t the kind of husband Gisèle deserved, I wasn’t the kind of father my children deserved, he says.

Despite his recent weeks away from the upper house, Fetterman insists he is both mentally and physically capable of carrying out his duties.

After his win, Fetterman realized he wasn’t himself. Twitter/@AJentleson Senator John Fetterman was released March 31 after checking into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in February.

Hell yes, and that’s why I do it, he told KDKA. Just the way all Pennsylvanians work, you take a day and a day and work hard, and that’s exactly what I’m doing here.

If Fetterman proves unable to serve, Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro will name a replacement, with a special election to be held next year.
