The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) has called for a formal apology from State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) after her Tuesday tirade in which she called a GOP lawmaker the “N word.”

On Thursday, 1819 News reported Givan’s comments from the floor of the Alabama House of Representatives, where she used a 2017 song by hip-hop artist Jay-Z to refer to State Representative Kenneth Paschal (R-Pelham) as an N-word.

“The Alabama Republican Party strongly condemns Rep. Juandalynn Givan of District 60 for her premeditated and inappropriate statements toward another member of the Alabama House of Representatives,” said ALGOP President John Wahl. “I demand that he apologize immediately to Rep. Kenneth Paschal.”

The 2017 song Givan referenced is titled “The Story of OJ”, which frequently uses the racial epithet.

The song’s hook reads:

“It’s bright, it’s dark, it’s fake, it’s real, it’s rich, it’s poor, it’s home, it’s field Again, always nigga”

Givan directed the song’s lyrics at Paschal saying repeatedly, “You’re still one”.

Following Thursday’s story, Givan spoke from the House floor, unapologetic for his remarks, saying “this may not be the last” time.

“The people of Alabama expect their elected officials to behave in a manner worthy of this high privilege,” Wahl continued. “Representative. Pascal was vulgarly considered a term that is below the dignity and respect of any human being. We cannot sit idly by and allow this honorable gentleman who has served in uniform and continues to serve in as a public servant with duty and commitment to be treated and referenced so vilely in violation of the decorum of the House chamber.
