Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has blamed the Tories’ heavy losses in local elections on the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

She also noted that the Conservative Party had been in power for a long time.

The Cabinet Minister acknowledged that voters were frustrated and angry, but claimed that Rishi Sunak was starting to regain the public’s trust.

The prime minister was blamed by some Tories after the party lost 960 advisers in Thursday’s poll.

Ms Frazer told Sky News Sophy Ridge on Sunday’s show: If we could look at the context of the whole local election, we’ve been in power for a long time.

We just had a pandemic that disrupted the lives of many people and affected the economy, just like the war in Ukraine, which continues.

Asked if she understood the extent of her party’s losses, she said: Totally, it’s really important that we listen to people. I know people are frustrated and angry.

She said she recognized the results weren’t good, adding: I totally understand that we have to do better and I think we’ll deliver.

The party was restoring confidence as Mr Sunak began to quietly implement his five priorities, including tackling inflation, Ms Frazer said.

I fully recognize that we have had a very difficult few years.

I think the Prime Minister, who has now been in office for six months, is getting the country back on track and keeping his promises. I think they were starting to gain the trust of the British public.

Pressed on whether the Tories should deliver more than Mr Sunak’s promises from January, she told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg On Sunday: We absolutely have to reflect. I think Rishis was only prime minister for six months.

Kuenssberg said: It’s not five minutes, it’s six months.

It’s not five minutes, but it’s huge challenges, Ms. Frazer replied.

Meanwhile, Labor was celebrating quite encouraging local election results, which saw the Sir Keir Starmers party win 635 seats and take control of a further 22 local authorities.

Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting told Ridge: I think for the next general election Labor is feeling confident but not complacent.
