Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer, whose handling of the mass shooting trial of Marjory Stoneman Douglas has drawn praise from her colleagues and victims’ families as well as scrutiny from defense attorneys and legal observers , resigns from the bench.

Scherer, 46, delivered her resignation letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday, without offering an explanation of why she is stepping down or what she plans to do next. His resignation takes effect on June 30.

The resignation was widely expected, with the judge making multiple veiled comments from the bench implying that she would not be around for much longer. She was re-elected unopposed in 2020 for a six-year term. The governor will choose her replacement.

Judge Scherer approached me last year to let me know she would be leaving the bench soon, Broward Chief Administrative Judge Jack Tuter said. During her service, Judge Scherer handled one of the toughest cases in Broward County history. She did it with professionalism and dignity. On behalf of the 17th Circuit, we wish Judge Scherer health and prosperity in her future endeavours.
