Wales launches anti-racism training and resources for practitioners working with babies and young children

The Welsh Government has launched anti-racism vocational training for the childcare, play and early years sector.

The Free, Diverse, Anti-Racist Professional Learning (DARPL) offering and resources are available for practitioners working with infants and young children providing child care, play and early education.

The training is funded by the Welsh Government and supports the Wales Anti-Racism Action Plan.

The Welsh Government has said it is committed to creating an anti-racism Wales by 2030, “which calls for zero tolerance of racism in all its forms”.

Childcare, Play and Early Years (CPEY) Anti-Racism Professional Learning Resources are supported by the Childcare Wales Learning and Working Mutually (CWLWM), the umbrella body for the sector.

Launching CPEY’s anti-racism resources at an event in Llanbedr, near Harlech, Deputy Minister for Social Services Julie Morgan said: “Childcare, play and early years provide inclusive environments, tolerant and fun where children can grow and develop.

We want our early years, child care and play workforce to understand and reflect all of the different communities in which our children live.

This new Diversity and Anti-Racism Professional Learning Series (DARPL) will help expand that understanding and make every child feel welcome.

Similar professional learning and anti-racism resources were launched last year for the education sector.

In a written statement, Morgan said: Being anti-racist means actively identifying and eradicating systems, structures and processes that produce dramatically different outcomes for ethnic minority groups. Even when we don’t see ourselves as “racist”, if we do nothing, we are complicit in the continuation of racism.

The DARPL CPEY Practitioner Professional Learning Series is comprised of three online training sessions that aim to demystify anti-racism and explore actions that can be adapted in childcare, play, childcare and children and early childhood education.

The series will explore the impact of racism on the well-being and lives of Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities and the issues that can negatively affect young children and their families.

DARPL Director Chantelle Haughton said: “Professional learning and rethinking our strategic approaches must be priorities in ethical anti-racism leadership. DARPL offers the opportunity and expectation to enable equity, genuine inclusion and cynefin for every child in Wales.

‘Cynefin’ is a Welsh term, which has no direct English translation, but loosely means ‘habitat’. It is defined by Curriculum for Wales as “the place where we feel we belong, where the people and landscape around us are familiar to us, and where the sights and sounds are reassuringly recognizable.
