The Detroit Lions shocked the NFL when they selected Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
In the weeks that followed, he was considered one of the biggest litters in the first round and one of the worst values. Gibbs heard all the talk and made it very clear at Lions mini rookie camp on Saturday that he didn’t care.
At all.
“Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” Gibbs said Saturday, via ESPN. “I really don’t care.”
The problem with the pick wasn’t just that Gibbs wasn’t slated for the first round, or at least not that high, it’s that the running back has been heavily devalued in recent years. It is considered a team-dependent position with a very short lifespan.
Running backs need strong offensive lines in front of them and a well-rounded attack to succeed, while they also have the shortest career of any position in football.
This led to teams waiting until later in the draft to address this position.
But the Class of 2023 bucked that trend a bit as Bijan Robinson entered the top 10 for the Atlanta Falcons while Gibbs went a few picks later to the Lions.
Gibbs’ Lions career didn’t get off to a good start as he suffered an ankle injury on Friday, but he insisted everything was fine.
The Lions had two first-round picks in 2023 and used them on Gibbs at No. 12 and Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell at No. 18 overall.
Detroit narrowly missed the playoffs in the 2022 season and should be a strong contender for NFC North this season.
