Police Scotland said they were investigating graffiti found written on Kilwinning Abbey as officers carried out routine cycle patrols in the area yesterday, Tuesday May 16.
The offensive remarks were found scribbled on the tower’s heritage center using colored chalk.
Early inquiries indicate that these were written between Wednesday May 10 and Saturday May 13.
Kilwinning Abbey, founded in the 1100s, is a listed monument – protected as a site of national importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.
As a result, police had to seek advice from the Streetscene team at Historic Environment Scotland and North Ayrshire Council on how to remove them safely.
The Abbey needed a specialist cleaning solution to remove it from the ashlar sandstone without causing further damage.
After launching an investigation into the matter, Police Scotland are looking for anyone with further information about the vandalism.
A force spokesman said: “Local officers on routine cycle patrol found a series of racial and homophobic slurs written in colored chalk yesterday at the Abbey Tower Heritage Centre, Kilwinning.
“Investigations indicate that the offensive chalk scribbles may have been written between Wednesday, May 10, 2023 and Saturday, May 13, 2023.
