Police are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against former North Lanarkshire Council Leader Jordan Linden.

Mr Linden, whose resignation as leader of the council led to the collapse of the SNP administration in the region, resigned from the council and left the party earlier this year.

The Sunday Mail newspaper reported that five men made allegations about the former leader, two of whom spoke to detectives.

Mr Linden told the newspaper he did not accept the allegations made against him.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: Officers are investigating a report of a sexual assault incident that took place in 2017. Investigations are at an early stage and ongoing.

SNP leader Humza Yousaf was campaigning in Bellshill on Saturday ahead of a by-election triggered by Mr Lindens’ resignation from the council.

He said the party would investigate how it handled complaints about Mr Linden.

Several councilors have also left the North Lanarkshire SNP group to sit as independents.

Mr. Yousaf admitted that PNS issues in the region could have been better addressed.

He said: We have an excellent local candidate here.

As Prime Minister and leader of the party, I said things could have been handled better.

That’s why do the investigation well.

What we have here now in North Lanarkshire is a Labor council backed by, frankly, the Tories, and that is not serving the people of this area at all.
