Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday dismissed remarks by President Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) that accused the White House of pandering to the senator and other progressives amid talks on the cap on the debt.
McCarthy had said on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that “when Bernie Sanders or AOC says something, the White House goes the other way.”
“Kevin McCarthy is now calling you directly by name just seconds ago on Fox News for being the reason the discussion on this fell through. Your response?” MSNBC’s Ali Velshi asked Sanders about “Velshi.”
“Well, I very much doubt it,” Sanders said.

“But to the extent that the White House says to these Republicans, ‘Stop your hypocrisy. Stop defending the billionaire class from paying their fair share of taxes when you want to cut programs including seniors, children, sick and the poor need it, “if I have a part to play – if progressives have a part to play in this, that’s great,” Sanders says.
McCarthy and Biden had a phone call Sunday as the president returned from the Group of Seven summit in Japan, cutting short plans for a longer international trip to return to Washington for negotiations.
Staff-level talks are expected to resume on Sunday, and the president and president are expected to meet on Monday as June 1 approaches – the date the Treasury has said it may run out of funds to avoid default.
