Williams-Sonoma: a solid company with positive momentum despite recent criticism

Positive momentum is building, with many investors confident in the company’s future growth and its potential to deliver strong returns over time.

Williams-Sonoma faces falling EPS estimates but continues to attract hedge funds and institutional investors
Williams-Sonoma, a specialty retailer with a significant online presence that offers high-end cookware and home furnishings, recently saw a drop in its quarterly earnings-per-share (EPS) estimates. In a May 18 note to investors, Telsey Advisory Group said it had lowered its first-quarter 2024 EPS estimate for the company from $2.48 to $2.42. However, the news was not all negative as Telsey still gave Williams-Sonoma an “outperform” rating and set the stock price target at $142.00.
Despite this recent decline in EPS estimates, Williams-Sonoma has continued to attract interest from hedge funds and other institutional investors. Bessemer Group Inc., for example, increased its stake in the company more than eight times during the fourth quarter of 2020, buying an additional 190 shares of Williams-Sonoma stock valued at $25,000.
Similarly, Quarry LP more than doubled its position in the first quarter of 2021 when it acquired an additional 193 shares worth $34,000. Whittier Trust Co added 210 additional shares during the same period, valued at approximately $36,000, while Global Retirement Partners LLC nearly doubled its holdings by acquiring 305 additional shares valued at approximately $42,000.
CoreCap Advisors LLC also entered the scene with a new position in the fourth quarter of last year when they bought shares worth around $43,000.
As such, while there have been concerns about Williams-Sonoma’s EPS for the first quarter of 2024 in particular and the impact this could have on earnings in fiscal 2024 and beyond, Telsey Advisory Group expects these to be around $13.20 EPS and $14.00 EPS respectively, the company remains an attractive investment opportunity for large financial institutions.
Overall, despite fluctuating quarter-to-quarter earnings forecasts and valuations, Williams-Sonoma’s presence in the high-end cookware and home furnishings market continues to attract interest. Investor attention, with hedge funds and other institutional investors actively seeking to add to their positions in the company even as its EPS estimates dip slightly in the near term.
