Liberty Township family without internet, blaming Altafiber for damage

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio A Liberty Township family said Altafiber cut their cable line, leaving them without internet service for a week.

James Robinson said about a dozen Altafiber workers were installing fiber optic cables in his front yard last Monday. There are flags lining Robinson’s front yard indicating where it will take tearing to install a new underground line.

In addition to tearing up his yard and leaving equipment there for days, Robinson said they cut his internet line in the process.

The big problem right now is that we don’t have the internet and my wives are working from home, Robinson said.

Robinson said he contacted Altafiber and was told they couldn’t help him.

They said, “Hey listen, we don’t provide your internet connection, so we can’t fix it,” he said.

Robinson wants Altafiber to take responsibility for the damage they caused. Instead, he said he couldn’t find anyone to help solve the problem.

It’s frustrating, Robinson said. You caused this, but feel like you don’t have to fix the problem.

James Robinson said Altafiber employees cut his internet cable and then tried to fix it with electrical tape.

Robinson said he never requested the installation of fiber optic cables. He was told it was approved by the city. Robinson isn’t the only one to report having these issues.

I’ve heard of other people having the same problem, Robinson said. My neighbor right here, his sister said they passed by their neighborhood and did the same thing. They cut the lines and destroyed their system. There must be some accountability.

Last August, WCPO reported problems that neighbors in West Chester were facing due to the installation of fiber optic cables by Altafibers. Some of the problems these neighbors faced last August included burst water pipes, power outages and torn yards following Altafiber’s installation of their fiber optic cables. Following this story, residents of Liberty Township, Deerfield Township, Hebron and Florence all reached out, saying they had had a similar experience with Altafiber.

Robinson thinks it’s time for Altafiber to be held accountable.

Altafiber can’t just say what they told me, he said.

Robinson said Altafiber told him they didn’t do it intentionally.

I said, yes, people don’t do things intentionally, but they have to be held accountable, he said. You know if I’m supposed to do something to your house, and I break a window, I didn’t do it on purpose, but I’m responsible for it.

Monday evening, the Robinsons are still without internet. They will be without internet until at least Friday before Spectrum can come out to make repairs.

WCPO contacted Altafiber to get their side of the story.
