Portland police said Thursday they have made an arrest in the four-alarm fire that tore through May apartments last week and that arson was the cause of the South 14th Avenue blaze. west and Taylor Street.

Police have arrested Garrett Repp, 30, on allegations of arson, criminal mischief and misdemeanor reckless endangerment in the blaze that displaced residents of the 42 units. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center around 7 p.m.

Fire investigators entered the structurally poor building on Tuesday to investigate the cause of the fire. They called the investigation a success but did not release any results until Thursday.

It’s unclear how long Repp had lived in the May apartments, but the landlord issued an eviction order against Repp in February, claiming he owed $3,180 in rent, court records show.

On March 23, Repp failed to appear in court and he was due for deportation on March 31.

On April 17, the Multnomah County Circuit Court’s Landlords Department ordered Repp to move out by midnight April 23. A modified order was filed on May 1, ordering him to move out by midnight on May 7. A third order was issued on May 3, ordering that he move out by midnight on May 8.

The fire started on May 16.
