Mel Gibson’s long and tedious struggle with the best aspects of consciousness caused most of the industry to distance itself from the actor and filmmaker. The brilliant A-lister was suddenly deemed radioactive enough not to be suitable enough to hit with a ten foot pole.
But, despite the Mad Max actor’s unequivocal avoidance, two loud voices still echo through the crowd, singing and hailing praise on Mel Gibson’s behalf, asking Hollywood to give him a second chance.

Mel Gibson’s biggest supporters: RDJ and Jodie Foster
Over the past two decades in Hollywood, Mel Gibson has received a sort of informal support from two of his biggest and most vocal supporters: Robert Downey Jr. and Jodie Foster. His numerous entanglements with various socio-cultural and ethnic ideologies (in plain English, his anti-Semitic rants) and his allegations of verbal and domestic abuse attracted mainstream media attention in 2006. Although at the time, cancel culture was still a thing of the future, Gibson was canceled, and cruelly fast at that.

But despite his meteoric rise and tremendous fall, the actor helped launch the career of Robert Downey Jr. after his short stint in prison at the turn of the century. The latter has since remained grateful to Gibson for giving him the chance to find his feet and devote his exceptional talents to the industry that helped him grow.
While Gibson’s relationship with Jodie Foster isn’t nearly as dramatic as his friendship with RDJ, it’s still exceptional in that the two have found comfort, loyalty, trust, and friendship in one another. in the other, society traits that hardly belong in a place like Hollywood, let alone between an array of A-listers as rarely talented as these two.
Jodie Foster defends Mel Gibson
When Mel Gibson spoke about Silence of the Lambs star Jodie Foster, all he could say were awfully kind and wonderful things:
I just love him, that’s all. You meet people like that sometimes. You instantly fall in love, and that’s it, and that’s the purest kind of thing. We call each other all the time and we just say “Hey, I love you”.
And so, when the same publication, The New York Times, had an interview with Jodie Foster, the actress who has been supporting the Braveheart actor for a very long time, said similar things in return:
It’s not for me to judge his behavior. Hes definitely not sexist and definitely not racist. I know the guy I know, someone who is really emotional, who I can have long, long conversations with, who is trustworthy, who shows up for me.

The couple forged an undeniable friendship on the set of Richard Donner’s film, Maverick in 1994. They have remained inseparable since. Foster also became the first filmmaker to offer Mel Gibson a chance to return after semi-retirement with her 2011 feature, The Beaver.
That same year, Robert Downey Jr. also asked Gibson to take the stage and present him with the award at the 25th Annual American Cinematheque Awards. The vigorous, volatile and impassioned speech that followed is still considered one of the most engaging monologues, enough to move an entire theater crowd and truly believe in the power of forgiveness.
