Kiryandongo District Police have in custody a police officer attached to Bweyale Police Station on allegations of extorting money from suspects.
Jimmy Ayangi, attached to the criminal intelligence department, is in detention at the CPS in Kiryandongo after being nabbed on Wednesday evening with 300,000 shillings, which he allegedly extorted.
The defendant allegedly extorted money from Florence Acan, the mother of businessman Denis Kisembo, who is also in police custody, saying he would help settle her case outside the police.
Acan, a business manager and resident of Karakaliya cell in Bweyale town council, told police that the officer approached her privately and told her to shell out 400,000 shillings in order to settle her case that is still pending to the police.
However, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, Kisembo was arrested on the allegation of colluding with a thief in Bweyale.
The source continued to say that this decision is the result of the suspect being detained without presenting him in court.
When contacted, Kiryandongo District Police Commander Edison Muhangi said Ayangi’s arrest came after police received numerous complaints from members of the Bweyale community about his actions. .
Muhangi said the suspect will be arraigned in court for extortion and liaising with thieves and robbers to cause destruction in the area.
The DPC pledged to continue to arrest roving police officers who collude with criminals to cause chaos and bring them to court.
Muhangi called on the public to report police officers asking for money to help them with their cases.
Ayangi’s arrest comes at a time when joint security operations are searching for criminal gangs in Kiryandongo District, particularly in the area of Bweyale Town Council, Mutunda Sub County, Town Council of Karuma and the Kigumba municipal council.
