Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) leader and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on May 31 responded to the claims of protesting wrestlers and said he would “hang himself” if the allegations against him were proven.
“If a single allegation against me is proven, I will hang myself,” the WFI chief said at a public rally in UP’s Barabanki.
Singh further criticized the wrestlers for announcing that they were immersing their medals in the Ganges in protest against him.
“It’s been four months and they want me hanged. The government does not hang me that is why they gathered in Haridwar on May 30th and threatened to dip their medals in the Ganges. It won’t bring the pain they want for me, it’s all emotional drama,” he said.
“If you (the wrestlers) have evidence, take it to court and I’m willing to accept any punishment,” Singh said.
“Delhi Police are investigating the matter. I would be arrested if there is any truth to the charges (made by the wrestlers),” he added.
Earlier today, Delhi Police sources said that so far, no supporting evidence has been found to arrest the WFI chairman, in connection with the allegations made by fighters against him.
According to top sources, the Delhi Police will file their final report on the matter within 15 days. “In 15 days, we will submit our report to the court. This could take the form of a charge sheet or a final report,” they said.
Delhi Police sources further stated that there is no supporting evidence to prove the wrestlers’ claim. “He does not influence the witness or destroy the evidence,” they added.
Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, who have demanded the removal and arrest of the WFI president over allegations of sexual harassment, reached Haridwar earlier on May 30 to dip their medals into the Ganges.
The wrestlers then issued a five-day ultimatum to authorities to take action against the WFI chief.
Several ace wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik have protested against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment and demanding his arrest. They also questioned the fact that female wrestlers had to hide all day.
It should be noted that in an interview with a news channel, the family of the wrestler who filed a complaint (POCSO) against Brijbhushan Singh says that Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia & Phogat etc misplaced her, used her for their dirty politics.
