Bayern Munich’s No.8 position is getting crowded.

The writing has been on the wall for a few weeks now, but it looks like Leon Goretzka’s footballing future could take place somewhere other than Bayern Munich even if the midfielder doesn’t want to leave Bavaria.
According to a report from Tz reporters Mano Bonke and Philipp Kessler (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich brass are unhappy with the way the midfield tandem of Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich have worked together this season. Now the club want Kimmich to slip into the No.8 Goretzkas role, which puts the latter midfielders’ immediate future at risk.
Not only will Kimmich compete with Goretzka and Ryan Gravenberch, but RB Leipzig star Konrad Laimers’ move to the club is imminent, making the position far too crowded:
Bayern bosses are slamming midfield pivot Kimmich/Goretzka and considering snapping him, hence Rice’s interest in partnering with Kimmich. The general opinion is that the Kimmich/Goretzka combination is not homogeneous and no longer suitable.
The real key to the situation is Kimmich’s change of position, but the sacking of former sporting director Hasan Brazzo Salihamidzic could also play a role in Goretzka’s troubled future. If things go wrong in Bavaria, perhaps Liverpool FC could give the midfielder a fresh start:
Kimmich is considered more of a No.8. And along with Konrad Laimer, another No.8 has been signed – so it’s getting tight for Goretzka. Also, Hasan Salihamidi, who was considered a Goretzka supporter, is now gone. Liverpool could be a contender.
An interesting side note to the story is that while Bayern Munich decision makers are fans of Goretzka on the whole, there’s a bit of a feeling that he might be distracted by his off-field activism:
In general, Goretzka is highly regarded at the club. However, some decision makers are unhappy with the political involvement of players instead of focusing entirely on football. Raphael Brinkert, Goretzkas public relations manager, has close ties to the SPD political party.
Either way, Goretzka is in a situation where he could face an extremely limited role in the 2023/24 season. Kimmich rarely steps off the pitch and while there has been a change in Kimmichs’ management of playing time, there is simply too much body for another player to get meaningful minutes.
Obviously, this is something Goretzka, Laimer and Gravenberch will all have to consider.
