Wellington College is investigating after a profanity-laden tirade involving racist, sexist and homophobic language was posted online ahead of a first rugby union game against a rival school.

The post and the account it came from appear to have been deleted, but screenshots have circulated. It was released late last week ahead of the weekend’s rugby clash with Scots College. It references masturbation, immigrants, and drugs, and includes derogatory terms for Pacific Islanders, gay people, and women.

The general theme of the message was the hope that Wellington College would win the game.

Wellington College principal Glen Denham called the post heinous and launched an investigation.

He had launched an investigation that implicated him and senior executives.

We will leave no stone unturned, Dunham said, but we would not reveal what the investigation would entail. He confirmed that the school would not contact Facebook to find out the identity of the posters.

We have leads.

The poster was not a member of the XV first because we just know our kids, he said.

Denham hoped the poster was someone not at school, but said there would be consequences and an education if the culprit was found there.

A look back at the controversy around Israel Folau after a social media post in 2019.

The broader question of what was appropriate on social media had been addressed to the school during an assembly this week. His key message to end-of-life students was, all we have is our reputation.

In the end, the post failed in its attempt. It was a great game which the Scots won convincingly, Denham said. The teams played hard, but there was a lot of aroha between them afterwards.

This is not the first time Wellington College has made headlines for misguided social media posts. In 2017, students at the school posted “f…women,” while another said, “If you don’t take advantage of a drunk girl, you’re not a real toilet. [Wellington College] boy.”

The students later apologized but were suspended for five days.

Spurred on by this and another at St Patricks Silverstream, hundreds of protesters, mostly high school students, turned out to protest in Parliament against a perceived rape culture in schools.

In 2019, Australian rugby player Israel Folau got into trouble after an Instagram social media post that said drunks, gays, adulterers, liars and fornicators and others had hell beating them. waited unless they repented.
