Urban Meyer is the latest major college football figure to strongly criticize an aspect of the NCAA’s handling, or lack thereof, of name, likeness and likeness rights.

In a chat with Outkick’s Dan Dakich, Meyer took aim at NIL collectives, calling them a fancy word for cheating and a violation of current NIL rules.

I’m not saying it’s like that, but from what I understand it’s a fancy word for cheating, Meyer said. When I hear that word I cringe right now and hear the stories behind it that they’re gonna go to donors and boosters and ask for a lot of money and then decide who gets that money based on the level of capacity. Which I think is 1A of NIL’s rule, you can’t do that.

NIL Collectives are, essentially, organizations that exist to pool donor and booster funds and redirect them to players. While most are affiliated with specific universities, the schools themselves have no direct control over them, and university employees cannot make donations to them.

Ironically enough, Meyer joined the Board of Directors of LA Foundation, which bills itself as the No. 1 Official NIL Collective for Football and Basketball in the State of Ohio, in March 2022. As of Friday, he was still listed as a board member on his official website.

Either way, Meyer isn’t the only critic of the state of the NIL in college sports right now. At some point, major changes will have to be made, because it’s hard to argue your points.
