Two of Ajike AJ Owens’ sons blame each other for her death after she was shot and killed by a neighbor during a years-long feud over children playing outside their apartment complex in Florida, their grandmother said.

Marion County police arrested Susan Lorincz, 58, after allegedly shooting Owens, 35, through her door during a Friday night confrontation in Ocala.

Owens approached Lorincz’s apartment after the neighbor allegedly shouted racial slurs at Owens’ children and hit one of them with a roller skate.

Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, told reporters on Wednesday that the children were devastated by their mother’s death and believed they were at fault after telling her what Lorincz allegedly did to them.

Dias said Owens’ 9-year-old son saw his mother [get] shot down and killed. In his soul and in his heart, it is his fault that his older brother, his little sister and his little brother, as well as himself, will never see their mother again, because he went home and told his mother what what this woman had done to him. .

Dias added that Owens’ eldest son, 12, also blames himself and is traumatized by his inability to save his mother.

He told me that I couldn’t save her. I tried to do CPR on him,’ Dias said of the conversation with his sobbing grandson.

They see their mother murdered in cold blood, taking her from them at such a young age. It’s not fair that they have to deal with this, she added.

Dias and his family’s attorney, National Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump, called on prosecutors to upgrade Lorincz’s manslaughter charge to murder, while expressing frustration that it took four days after the incident for the police to announce that they had arrested the shooter.

One of the reasons I’m so relieved that the sheriff [Billy] Woods made the arrest last night is that he’s telling Pamela’s kids it wasn’t their fault, Crump said Wednesday.

We must remember now that this is only the first step towards justice. The state’s attorney, now that Sheriff Woods has done his job, now has a job to do and that is to zealously pursue the killer of AJ Owens, he continued. We want him to zealously pursue the murderer of AJ Owens, just as he would if the tables had been turned and a black woman shot a white woman in front of her children through a locked metal door.

Owens was shot on her neighbors’ doorstep in Ocala on Friday night in what Sheriff Woods said at a Monday news conference was the culmination of a two-and-a-half-year feud at an apartment complex.

Crump, who represented the family of Travon Martins in the fatal stand-your-ground case, said Lorincz shouted racial slurs at Owens’ children, leading to friction between them.

Phyllis Wills, another neighbor at the apartment complex, told reporters that Lorincz called the children slaves.

During an argument between Lorincz and the young children, she threw a roller skate that hit a 10-year-old boy, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday. When the boy and his 12-year-old brother went to her door, she reportedly opened her door and threw an umbrella at them.

Owens then went to confront the woman and asked her out. The mother was shot once and rushed to a nearby hospital where she died.

The sheriff’s office said in the statement announcing the arrest that the shooter claimed he pulled the trigger in self-defense and accused Owens of trying to break down the door.

Woods, however, said officers found no evidence of the allegation, telling Fox 35 the shooting was not a valid argument.
