LANCASTER, SC – A local couple are suing TruGreen after they claim a vendor launched a racist tirade by refusing service.
Channel 9’s Glenn Counts spoke to the couple’s lawyer who said the incident began when the company was trying to solicit their cases.
It shocked my conscience. And to be transparent, it upset me deeply, said attorney William Harding.

Harding, who represents the owners, said when they turned down TruGreens’ offer, an employee responded with a torrent of hate.
He kept texting her and making, as you can see in the trial, references to slavery. We’ve taken this action because it’s about shedding light on racism. It’s a question of responsibility, explained Harding

Harding said one of several messages sent by the employee read:
I see why you were all whipped, chained, beaten and hung from trees. I thought it was… over, but you just showed me my grandma was right. You don’t all deserve the air you breathe.
Channel 9 has contacted TruGreen to comment on the incident. The company responded with the following statement.
We are aware of the lawsuit and want to be clear that our company condemns these appalling actions. And will not tolerate such behavior.
The company also said it conducted an investigation and, based on the results of that investigation, promptly terminated the employee.
Harding said he would conduct his own investigation to determine whether or not this was normal behavior for the employee in question.
