The former Manchester City superstar has blasted La Liga titans Barcelona for Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami as at one point the Argentine looked destined for a return
Lionel Messi ready to change from Inter Miami
Sergio Aguero has blamed Lionel Messi for not returning to Barcelona on the doorstep of those running the show at Camp Nou.
Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi has shocked the footballing world by confirming he will be parting ways with Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his current contract, which expires at the end of this month, to join the Major League Soccer team Inter Miami. The deal was confirmed on Wednesday, just before Messi admitted he wanted to be able to return to Barcelona.
The Argentine told Spanish newspapers Sport and Mundo Deportivo in a joint interview: “Yes, the truth is that I obviously really wanted it, very excited to be able to come back, but, on the other hand, after going through what I lived and the exit I had, I didn’t want to find myself in the same situation again – waiting to see what was going to happen and leaving my future in someone else’s hands, so to speak.
“I wanted to make my own decision, thinking of myself, of my family. Even though I heard that La Liga had accepted everything and everything was fine for me to come back, there were still a lot of other things that needed to be done.”
Instead, he will now wear Miami pink rather than Barcelona red and blue, which Messi’s close friend and Premier League legend Sergio Aguero claims is the Spanish giants’ fault.
The former Manchester City ace lamented Barcelona’s lack of effort in their pursuit of Messi, telling ESPN: “The Messi decision? Barcelona didn’t do enough for Leo’s return.

“Yes, there was a thing with La Liga and also the economic situation, but Leo made the right decision not to wait until the last second like he did in 2021.”
Aguero also claimed he made sure Messi was aware of Miami’s poor form, adding: “I spoke to Messi yesterday, messaged him with a screenshot of the league table. Eastern Conference and I said, ‘Your team is behind it! up to 8th or 9th!'”
He went on to reveal that Messi saw the fun side, bursting into laughter before admitting the club, co-owned by fellow footballing icon David Beckham, had to take part in the play-offs.
Messi and Aguero have been close friends for years and that may have played a part in the former deciding his next move after deciding to leave the French capital.
Much like Messi, Aguero now has a home in Miami and spends a lot of time there, which could help the ex-PSG star settle into his new club.
