In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Uma Thurman discussed her time in Batman & Robin, released in June 1997. In the Warner Bros. film, she played the role of a supervillain, Poison Ivy, who makes part of the fearsome enemies of Batman. .

She talked about having a great time filming the project. Directed by Joel Schumacher, the film starred George Clooney as the Caped Crusader, Chris ODonnell as Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the villainous Mr. Freeze.

Speaking of the late director, she said:

I was just talking about Joel Schumacher, the director who is a friend that I love so much. … I loved Joel Schumacher.

She added,

It was a fantastic experience. I had to wear a lot of rubber suits.

Although rubber suits were what she had to wear considering her role, she was happy that the role presented its own face. I didn’t have a rubber mask, she continues. I had my own face. But sometimes I had rubber braces on my face. It was about as much rubber as I have ever worked with, personally.

While her enthusiasm would have justified the role she was playing at the time, the film failed to live up to critics’ expectations.

Despite the film featuring an ensemble cast that were pretty much rising stars at the time, it garnered unfavorable reviews from critics. Due to the same, it even earned a spot among the worst movies ever made. Acclaimed film critic Gene Siskel considered it an “overproduced” film with the critic stating that he could have left it halfway had he not watched for professional purposes.

It was criticized for its toyetic approach with critics pointing out how the characters were unable to impress them throughout the film. What’s more ridiculous is the titular character himself, as Clooney is often considered the most capped crusader of all time. What made her character more criticized was her ni-them definition which was an unnecessary feature to begin with. Schumacher’s direction was also criticized, causing the film to end on a low note in all respects.

Batman & Robin is available on HBO Max.
