Being a running back in the NFL is hard work. Not only do tailbacks have to put up with being constantly physically punished on the field by all the punches and kicks from opposing defenses, but they also have to deal with the idea that their position is seen as more disposable than others. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris raised that particular concern amid Dalvin Cook’s recent release from the Minnesota Vikings.
Especially when we say that from a certain age, we no longer have years. Which is crazy, Najee Harris told reporters during the minicamp (h/t Noah Strackbein of All Steelers Fan Nation). If you feel you can still play, who’s to say you can’t? They don’t know your body or haven’t been in your shoes, they’re just people hiding behind the internet. They don’t really know how you train. They’re just people making assumptions they know nothing about. So seeing people get released, especially in my position, is like, what did they do? Are they getting hurt?
Najee Harris further underlined his surprise that such a productive and talented running back as Cook was surprisingly cut by the Vikings. If it can happen to a running back of Cook’s level, it could very well happen to anyone in the league.
Dalvin Cook is coming off several 1,000-yard seasons. It’s money for the team, they have to pay someone? I don’t know. It was an eye opener for me, Harris said.
Najee Harris is entering her third season in the NFL. In 2022, he rushed for 1,034 yards and seven touchdowns on 272 carries.
