On Saturday, Karnataka Cooperation Minister and Minister in Charge of Hassan District, KN Rajanna, reacting to criticism from BJP leaders of the “Anna Bhagya” free rice scheme, sought to know with whose permission the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to deposit Rs 15 lakh in people’s bank accounts.
He said this while interacting with reporters in Hassan against the backdrop of BJP state leaders asking the Congress government about the free rice program announcement without discussing the issue with the central government.
“When Prime Minister Modi announced the deposit of Rs 15 lakh to all accounts, did he take permission?” Rajanna asked.
He also said there is no need for Congress to discuss with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and announce programs. “Are they going to give away for free? We’re going to pay the money and make the purchase,” he said.
The Anna Bhagya program under which the Congress government promised to provide 10 kg of rice for free to the poor has sparked controversy.
Congress alleges that the BJP government in the Center is sabotaging the program and depriving the poor of food.
