The Women and Gender Equality Commission supports the steps taken by the government to ensure that the latest incident involving Minister Nigel Dharamlall, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, is fully investigated.

There is an urgent need to eliminate the culture that allows bad behavior. We must insist that those who make the laws have a mandate to enforce them at all times. Anyone who breaks the law must bear the consequences of their act.

Men in society who hold positions of power should be held accountable for their actions, especially those that lead to the oppression and victimization of women and girls, especially those who come from less privileged backgrounds. Women, especially girls, must not be treated in a way that denies their humanity and violates their rights.

Every citizen has the right to defend themselves against any type of violation. The advent of social media and technology allows any victim to denounce in a few minutes any violation of their rights.

Patriarchy and its offensive and violent consequences in Guyana have been addressed in our laws, including the Sexual Offenses Act and our Inheritance Laws which are in place to give voice to the victims of these brutal and illegal practices.

Therefore, those in society, especially in the social, economic and political spheres, who use their privileges to exploit or oppress those whom they consider to be below their real or perceived authority should be warned.

Patriarchy exists in all forms of social structures in families, schools, workplaces, financial institutions and exists in all male-dominated positions of power.

Much work has been done by policymakers at all levels, in government, in civil society and community organizations, women’s organizations and groups across the country to empower women to advocate for their rights and report any violation of their rights. .

This culture that allows the violation of women’s human rights must end. It’s not business as usual. Enough is enough!
