The video, originally posted to Facebook by Shaka Pitts on June 16, went viral when it was reposted on multiple social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram and the r/PublicFreakout subreddit. Underneath the Reddit post, users blasted the man for outright racist behavior and said there was no longer any chance the owner could sell his booze in peace.
In the recording posted online, Shaka Pitts could be seen recording outside the store and advising people not to shop at the “racist spot”. He points the camera at Doug who was working behind the counter through the glass and says:
“This guy is a racist. Don’t buy here. Racist a*s. Every time I come here he has an attitude and he’s a racist”
Pitts opens the door and registers Doug Marcus. Doug looks at Pitts and says:
“F**k you n****r. Understood?”
Pitts then leaves the store, stating:
“I get it. Thanks, that’s what I needed sir.” Netizens slam store owner’s racist behavior as Yelp reviews plummet
Netizens on several social media platforms were furious with the store owner’s behavior. Towson Wines and Spirits Inc.’s Yelp page was so bombarded that Yelp had to shut down other reviews due to a massive influx of people calling the owner.

Racist liquor store owner throws an n-bomb at his customer
@detectfights Well, at least now every sane person with integrity knows not to frequent this place. Where are the black-owned businesses? Spend your dollars there and let that great wizard sink in! @detectfights Guy couldn’t help himself. But I’m sure this store is in a place where it feels comfortably not worried.@detectfights At first I was like, oh come on! How do we know he’s a…oh, nevermind. Yes, I’m nowhere near the US, but I’ll still never shop there. @detectfights I’m so sick of seeing so much open racism and hostility in America now. I know it’s always been bad since the Trump presidency, they feel they have a free rein to spew their wickedness and are trying to put it back in the role of finishing destroying this country with hate. 🤦🏻♀️@detectfights when you become a store owner you should always make everyone feel welcome, it’s disgusting to see people trying to justify abuse and discrimination as their way of “ express their opinion” seen the same with trans people the uproar about it
However, many Twitter users defended the store owner’s behavior saying that every story has two sides. Users suspected the cameraman’s behavior and wondered why he continued to shop there.
@detectfights The, uh, victim here looks like a troublemaker. Not a reliable review, despite all the “yelping”… I bet the dude was rude to the owner but forgot to film that part. @detectfights Let’s see the previous 3 or 4 interactions between these 2..
Under the Instagram repost of the video, posted by murder_ink_bmore, comments were mostly split between people who knew the store owner and said he was a good man and people who called him a racist.

In an interview with AFRO News, Shaka Pitts said this was her second visit to the store, adding that the environment was unwelcoming. Pitts got a packet of pistachios and Doug just held his hand open on the counter for “three bucks”. Pitts wanted to pay over the phone but Doug remained unresponsive to his demands, which Shaka Pitts said was disrespectful. He told AFRO News:
“Don’t just reach out and [refuse] talk to me while I’m attending your establishment. I felt disrespected as a person.
After scanning and manually paying for his item himself, Pitts called out Doug for his disrespect, but he was interrupted.
“I was talking to him and I said, ‘Brother, that’s not -‘ and as soon as I said the word ‘brother,’ he said, ‘I’m not your brother,'” he said. -he declares.
He then added:
“I’m old enough to know that when a white man is offended by ‘brother,’ nine times out of 10 he’s a racist.”
This prompted Shaka Pitts to pull out her phone and start recording. This confrontation culminated in the incident shown in the video.
Doug Marcus responded to Shaka Pitts’ Facebook post on June 16 saying he was sorry.
Doug admitted he was wrong and said he wanted to apologize in person.
