Polish bus exorcised after years of criticism

[ad_1]

Passengers on the motorway to Hel can no longer travel on the 666 bus after the local public transport operator changed the number of a service to the famous Polish seaside resort following criticism from religious groups.

The new 669 summer service began operating on Saturday June 24.

The town of Hel is a magnet for holidaymakers who are drawn to its sandy beaches and forest trails, which bear little resemblance to the fiery pit of eternal damnation that its name evokes in the minds of English speakers.

Tourists and locals alike have long seen the amusing side of the name and to many of them the 666 bus, referring to the number of the beast associated with Satan, seemed like an innocent joke.

Not everyone found it amusing, however, and the service faced criticism from some people who felt their religious sensibilities were offended by the pun.

The bus company said it had been receiving complaints from Christian individuals and groups for almost 10 years.
