In Schools Must Meet the Needs of All Students (Reading Eagle, June 17), Dr. Erica Hampton says her son’s school had racist themes at sporting events. She describes a gym full of white children wearing undershirts and rag scarves, items associated with black men from poor neighborhoods. I would be interested in the response from the school districts.

The idea that schools should meet the needs of all students is important, but the article goes on to describe a racist environment that permeates the school and the likely anger and anguish of boys from other schools entering the gymnasium. . How did the schools allow these nights to happen? Her son should have gone to another school.

I believe most people are tired of hearing how racism permeates our country and the arguments that America engages in systemic and consistent discrimination of people by race and gender, making it a country where only privileged white men can succeed. How could a racist country elect a black president twice? Why do so many people want to come to America, and people don’t leave a racist country? How come most NBA and NFL players are black?

Hamptons’ thesis that schools should meet the needs of all students is correct but gets lost in the message about racism. America has and is making progress on racism, diversity and inclusion and will continue to do so if common sense is used and people ride the opportunity train rather than the victim train.
