The Supreme Court has ruled 6-3 that racial preferences in college admissions violate the US Constitution.

Finally!

No student with high grades and test scores should be rejected in favor of a lesser candidate who has the right skin color.

Evidence provided to the court showed that Harvard and the University of North Carolina discriminated against Asian American and white applicants.

A black, Hispanic, or Native American student with a combined SAT score above 1,100 could be invited to apply to Harvard, but an Asian girl would need at least 1,350 and an Asian boy at least 1,380.

The real opportunity gap in this nation is not between blacks and whites.

It’s between rich and poor.

Contrary to what most Americans think, affirmative action has never helped poor children.

In fact, Harvard favors rich kids.

Only 3% of students come from low-income families.

According to data provided by Harvard researcher Raj Chatty, a staggering 67% come from families in the fifth highest earning countries.

Three-quarters of black and Hispanic students at Harvard come from high-income families.

Judge Clarence Thomas points out that Harvard offers the same increase in admissions to a wealthy black applicant, given all the advantages in life, as to a black applicant from a poor family with seemingly insurmountable odds to overcome. .

All the while, Harvard rejects Asian American applicants with higher grades and test scores, even those from poor families.

College administrators are already trying to circumvent the court ruling by waiving standardized tests that make discrimination hard to hide.

It is dishonorable.

Instead, they should remove racial preferences and reach out to economically disadvantaged students with high potential, regardless of race.

The goal should be to promote economic mobility and help keep the American Dream alive.

Students from low-income families, poor neighborhoods and failing schools score 399 points lower on the SATs in math and English than other students.

If anyone needs a helping hand in the admissions process, it’s a poor kid.

Black students overall score just 56 points lower, according to a Century Foundation study.

Advocates of affirmative action insist that a racially diverse student body promotes learning.

In 1978, Judge Lewis Powell, the swinging vote on a court divided on affirmative action, argued that racial considerations were not allowed to rectify past injustices, but should be allowed to promote diversity on campuses. .

Powell said students of all races would benefit from being exposed to different viewpoints. In retrospect, it’s laughable.

In fact, Harvard and other elite schools offer blacks separate dorms, lounges, and even separate graduation ceremonies, ensuring they will have minimal interaction with students of other races.

During closing arguments, Thomas pressed Harvard and UNC attorneys about the educational benefits of racial diversity.

He got no response.

Ironically, Thomas writes that with nearly 50 years to develop their arguments, neither Harvard nor UNC, two of the largest research institutes in the world, have been able to explain the supposed link between racial diversity and educational advantages. .

He suggests that two white students, one from Appalachia and the other from an affluent suburb of San Francisco, can provide more diversity than two students, one black and one white, who attended schools in elite on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

It’s racist to assume that a black student has a different point of view just because of a different skin color.

The left and its media allies are slamming the court for throwing out what New York Times legal analyst Adam Liptak calls decades of precedent.

Fake.

There is no precedent for permanent affirmative action.

The court didn’t want it to last forever.

In his view, Roberts makes it clear that one of the main reasons UNC and Harvard lost business is because they didn’t state an end date.

Last fall, Judge Amy Coney Barrett pointed out that the court had never viewed race-conscious admissions as a positive good.

When he upheld affirmative action at the University of Michigan Law School in 2003, the judges knew it was dangerous and there had to be an end point, Barrett explained.

That’s when Judge Sandra Day O’Connor said it shouldn’t be needed in 25 years (i.e. 2028).

Yet when Barrett pressed UNC attorneys and Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar for a time when they could see it ending, she got no response.

The correct answer is now.

Affirmative action is a euphemism for a nasty process of reverse discrimination. 25 years older won’t make her any prettier.

The left insists the court is recklessly deviating from precedent to further its conservative political agenda.

Not so.

It was the three liberal justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson who actually overturned the precedent.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was among the three dissenting voices.REUTERS

They invent a new rationale for affirmative action, claiming that it is justified to right historical wrongs.

This is the complete opposite of what Powell judged in 1978.

Roberts harshly reprimanded the three dissenters for this.

The court has long rejected their main thesis.

Thomas warns of the dangers ahead if the liberal justices’ view ever prevails.

It will lead to a world in which everyone is defined by their skin color, demanding ever-increasing rights and preferences based on that.

Fortunately, the Constitution and this court stand in the way.
