“Barricheco is certainly doing its best”

F1 fans were quick to slam Red Bull driver Sergio Perez after yet another disappointing performance in qualifying, which saw him finish P15 at the 2023 Austrian GP on Friday June 30.

Given that this is a sprint weekend, the Mexican rider will have another chance to redeem himself in the sprint race later on Saturday. But a series of lap cuts at the Red Bull Ring will be a sign of concern for him.

In Q2, Sergio Perez didn’t get a clean lap as his three laps, which were good for the Top 3, were canceled due to track limit violations.

F1 fans have shown him no mercy on social media, with one fan even comparing him to former Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello and his well-documented struggles against Michael Schumacher, saying:

“Barricheco is definitely trying his best to get signed in the Chinese F4 Championship before Debris” @F1 Barricheco is definitely trying his best to get signed in the Chinese F4 Championship before Debris@F1 Barricheco is definitely trying his best to get signed sign in the Chinese F4 Championship before Debris https://t.co/NMVXKDnTh1

For the fourth consecutive time, Sergio Perez will start Sunday’s main race outside the Top 10. He said he was hampered by another car in the qualifying session which was not reviewed by the stewards.

Speaking to F1.com, Perez said:

We were a bit confused, but once I got the feedback it was on the way to [Turn] 10, everything was clear and I was on a good lap, but all of a sudden on my last lap I found, I think, [Alex] Albon. I just went straight, couldn’t stop. I think I lost a tenth or a bit more than that just going straight, but the marshals didn’t consider me stuck. There are so many things I can control, and unfortunately this one, you close out a good lap and then all of a sudden you get stuck and you have a penalty, he added.

It will be fascinating to see how Sergio Perez approaches the two standalone events on Saturday in hopes of building momentum ahead of Sunday’s main race.

In the previous Sprint weekend, he showed his prowess and took victory in the format, which was the catalyst for his victory in the main race in Baku. Perez is hoping for something similar on Saturday to salvage another failed weekend.
