ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Belmont County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a suspected rape following an incident over the weekend.
Chief Deputy James Zusack confirmed on Wednesday that an investigation was being carried out by detectives in his office. He declined to provide details of the alleged incident.
In a phone interview, Zusack was asked if his department was aware of any reports that a rape had occurred Friday or over the holiday weekend in the St. Clairsville area, and that more than person was possibly accused of rape. Zusack said he was aware of the reports and the matter was being investigated by his department, not the St. Clairsville police.
He did not specify where the incident took place.
Zusack noted that detectives were conducting interviews related to the allegation and no arrests had been made.
“It’s still under investigation,” Zusack said.
A St. Clairsville Police Department office administrator said she spoke with Chief Matt Arbenz, who told her his department had not received any reports of a rape.
