City is hotbed of systemic racism, Labor-backed study finds

A press release for the 52-page report, first exposed by the Daily Mail, also claimed that black people are 90 times more likely to be stopped and searched by police than their white counterparts. For Asians, the figure was 18 times.

However, the report itself went on to state that the overwhelming majority of registered searches were of white Britons, with 1,843 incidents.

On its website, IERUK said the five-year project was funded by York City Council.

Miss Nije said: This work is important because the data extensively documents that racism in York is casual, systemic and structural. It manifests in many forms that disproportionately and negatively impact the lives and livelihoods of people of color.

Katie Lomas, Executive Member of the Councils for Finance, Performance, Major Projects and Equalities, said: We very much appreciate the work done by IERUK and the independence they bring to this work.

We recognize the challenges for organizations across the city to ensure a truly anti-racism environment, and we are pleased to reaffirm our commitment to becoming the premier anti-racism city in the North.

The report may misrepresent York

However, opposition advisers said the report risked misrepresenting tourists.

Chris Steward, the leader of the Conservative councils group, told the Daily Mail: I’ve lived in York all my life and I would certainly say York has no structural and systemic racism. I don’t understand how they can understand that the population is 14% ethnic minorities, it’s not that high.

Like everywhere, York has its problems, but I consider it a very friendly and tolerant place for people of all colors.

This will have people wondering why would York want to jump on this question? Is there a real problem in York? I wouldn’t see York as having a big problem with racism.
