The Pakistan men’s cricket team will return to action for the first time since May earlier this year when they take on Sri Lanka in a two-Test series, starting July 16. The series will also mark the start of Pakistan’s campaign in the new Test World Championship. cycle; the team had endured a forgettable 2021-23 cycle in the tournament, not recording a single home win. In fact, last year Pakistan won only one of nine Tests (against Sri Lanka), while conceding series defeats at home to Australia and England.

Babar Azam’s captaincy in the game’s longest format has come under scrutiny after a dismal home season, and the question has come up again as the team begin their campaign in the new cycle. Prior to the team’s departure for Sri Lanka, Babar attended a press conference where he was asked about his future as Test captain.
A reporter asked Babar if he would consider handing over the captaincy to someone else if the team failed to record a win against Sri Lanka.
In the last year, we have only won one game in nine Tests, against Sri Lanka. Pakistan is unable to win. I hope we win in Sri Lanka, but if we lose, will you consider giving the captaincy to someone else? Isn’t it possible that your captaincy is at fault if we are not able to win? the reporter asked Babar.

The Pakistani captain delved into the reasons behind the team’s losses and had a pretty straightforward answer to the captaincy question.
If you talk about the past, we didn’t play cricket well, that’s why we didn’t win. We lacked experience due to multiple injuries. Until you get 20 wickets, you won’t win. And we drew the series there, we didn’t lose. This time we will try to win, Babar said.
When it comes to the captaincy, I always give my best. It’s better if you ask the PCB that question, because they have to make that decision, the Pakistani captain said.
Babar leads the Pakistani squad in all three formats and will be at the helm when the team travel to India for the first time since 2016 for the ODI World Cup, which takes place in October-November later this year.
