Video of a woman shouting derogatory swear words and insults at a Latino family in an apartment complex has gone viral on social media platform, TikTok. She racked up nearly a million views before TikTok decided to remove the video due to “harassment and bullying, nudity and body exposure”.
CBS News Colorado was able to speak to the family who experienced this incident in hopes of raising awareness.
In the video, the lady is seen asking if she has a key fob, she goes on to say, “you’ve got a key fob, two people…you’ve got a Mexican party *beep* at the pool, trash.”
The family says that wasn’t the only time she asked them for a key fob.
According to the police report from Lakewood Police, the woman in the video was asking their group if they had a key fob because the resort has been dealing with a lot of “pools” lately. However, according to the parties involved, the lady did not request this information from any other family at the pool, just them. They felt targeted because of the color of their skin.
“I think the problem is that she racially profiled us, basically it made us feel like we weren’t good enough to live in the same apartment complex that she and her boyfriend lived in,” said Jada, who was part of the targeted family.
Jada’s boyfriend and her brother are renting in the apartment complex. They decided to have a barbecue on July 2 and invited family and friends.
Dawn, who introduced herself as Jada’s grandmother, was outside the apartment complex’s clubhouse when everything fell apart.
“And I look out the door and all I see is a commotion and as a grandma I think I have to make sure my granddaughters are okay or my daughter is sick, so I run to the door to see what’s going on and people are arguing,” Dawn said.
The altercation quickly escalated and both parties began to insult each other, but the white woman in the video began to speak out with derogatory insults towards the family, according to the video and the parties involved.
“She was like, ‘*beep* Mexicans and go back to Denver’ and she was like, ‘you’re trash, you’re trash and you’re gonna be trash, she was literally pointing the finger at the kids and doing that,'” Dawn said. .
According to the Lakewood police report, none of the parties at the scene wished to press charges at the time of the incident. One of the friends invited to the barbecue by the family, Mélanie Rangel-Olmedo was seated right next to the 14-year-old girl who was recording the incident on her phone. She says the white lady snatched it out of her hands as soon as she realized she was taping it, as seen in the video. She does not believe the incident was handled fairly.
“If I had to put my hands on her like I wanted when she came to see my friends’ daughter, because I’m a minority because I have tattoos, you (the police) would have handcuffed me without giving back. question an investigation,” he added. expressed Rangel-Olmedo.
CBS News Colorado has contacted the woman in the video and has yet to hear back.
The phone number she provided on the police report indicates he is no longer on duty.
Police said they could not take him in without a thorough investigation first, according to the family. The family on the lease who decided to have a barbecue for their family received a request for compliance or possession with a notice letter of statutory mediation from the apartment complex in Lakewood.
