Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression: Protesting is Not a Crime: Justice for the Tampa 5!

[Milwaukee, WI] – A joint rally between Students for a Democratic Society of UW-Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, and the Freedom Road Socialist Organization will be held Wednesday, July 12 at 5 p.m. at 941 E Wisconsin Ave. The event is part of a national day of action called by National Students for a Democratic Society and the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression. The request is that all charges be dropped against the Tampa 5.

On March 6, 2023, Students for a Democratic Society at the University of South Florida held a rally in defense of diversity in higher education when they were suddenly and violently assaulted by USF police prior to be arrested later. The Tampa 5 now face up to 10 years in prison despite having done nothing wrong. This comes amid an increase in attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion in classrooms across the United States with threats of defunding, delegitimization, and even outright bans.

Republicans and their Democratic aides in state government have taken aim at DEI programs before, with the most recent and successful example coming in the form of the new revenue-sharing bill (now known as the article name 12). With the passage of Section 12, Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s most diverse community, cannot use any of the new state funds to expand DEI programs.

Plus, we need look no further than AB 70/SB 96, a “riot bill” that would make protest a crime, to get an idea of what Republicans have in store for them. those who seek progressive change by organizing here in Wisconsin. The bill passed the state assembly in April and has yet to pass the state senate.

The fight against racist and political repression extends to cities and states across the country. Further proof of this is the recent Supreme Court decision that virtually ends affirmative action in colleges and universities. We expect to see an increase in these types of attacks from the right as conditions in our society continue to sharpen and polarize, and we stand ready to meet them on the streets whenever they arise.
