POLICE questioned a man over alleged racist abuse posted on Twitter after a Rotherham United home game in April.
The remarks were posted on social media after the Championship clash with Cardiff City at New York Stadium.
Ivory Coast defender Cédric Kipré’s 87th-minute goal gave the Welsh side a 2-1 win.
But remarks on Twitter about Kipre led to heavy criticism from the Millers and Cardiff, who “welcomed the strong and immediate public condemnation of Rotherham United”.
South Yorkshire Police have since spoken to a 23-year-old man from Rotherham.
“He was voluntarily interviewed and reported upon subpoena, as part of the ongoing investigation into reported racial abuse online,” a spokeswoman said.
The man has been served with a summons for offenses under the Communications Act 2003 – a provision of which makes it a criminal offense to post ‘malicious communication using social media’, and under the Crime and Disorders Act 1998, which was introduced to introduce specific rulings on “racially aggravated” offences.
