Crime and public safety are top of mind for most New Yorkers and Mayor Eric Adams wants to blame the media.

Sorry, Mr. Mayor: it’s not us, but the reality reported by the press and the reality in which New Yorkers live.

A new poll from Siena reveals that 70% of the city’s inhabitants fear being the victim of a crime.

They have reason to fear: the survey indicates that statewide, 9 percent have experienced a physical assault in the past year; A similar 9% were victims of burglary.

Yet Adams on Fox 5 suggested that reading about crime in the morning papers just plays on your psyche.

It notes that overall crime was down 4% in June year-on-year, with major crimes, including shootings and rapes, down across the board.

What it misses is how the randomness of crime (still above pre-COVID levels, by the way) really eats away at the psyche. Look at some recent news:

Last week, a 67-year-old woman was hit in the head with a rock in an unprovoked attack at Chelsea. And on the Upper East Side, an unknown man assaulted a 72-year-old woman on the street, dragging her violently to the ground in an attempted robbery. On Saturday, an 87-year-old Yemeni father of six was gunned down, along with three others in Brooklyn and Queens injured in a random spree of scooter-riding gun violence. A gunman on a scooter shot three people in Queens early Saturday, killing an elderly man and injuring two others. gunmen shot dead four other New Yorkers, including two small boys, in a park in the Bronx. Later that night, at another Bronx park, a stray bullet hit a 17-year-old in the chest. The city saw at least three other people shot dead Tuesday night, one of them fatally. A knife-wielding man wandered Times Square on Wednesday, threatening and gleefully apprehended before anyone was harmed thanks to an eagle-eyed civilian who alerted the cops.

Elderly people and children killed, shot and beaten unexpectedly; madmen and thugs shooting recklessly: these are facts of life all over the city.

Not to mention the frightening haze that afflicts even a trip to the drugstore, as Nicole Gelinas pointed out in the Wednesdays Post.

Or the crime on the subway (more than 30 dead since the start of the pandemic) that even makes hyper-progressive Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg admit to having a knot in his stomach every time a family member gets on. In a train.

We have to give Bragg some credit here. The fear is real, even for him to admit it publicly. Many politicians insult New Yorkers’ fear by spouting statistics like there’s a one in a million chance of being a victim of crime.

But that sentence completely misses the point, as New Yorkers have gone elsewhere in the Post with their own words.

No one wants to be that one in a million, but given the levels of chaos on our streets from unhinged drifters, zombified drug addicts and stray bullet fire, there’s no way of knowing when you’ll be. .

Stop blaming the messenger. Listen to New Yorkers.
