SAO PAULO A Brazilian judge has ordered a Peruvian fitness trainer from football club Universitario to remain in custody on Wednesday for allegedly making racist gestures to Corinthians fans during a Copa Sudamericana game the night before.

Sao Paulo police have arrested Sebastian Avellino at the NeoQuimica Arena following his side’s 1-0 loss to Corinthians on Tuesday in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana qualifiers. Three witnesses told police that Avellino made monkey gestures at them.

Avellino can appeal the decision and ask for bail. The Universitario players and other staff left Brazil hours before the judges’ decision to keep Avellino in custody.

Universitario defended Avellino in a statement saying the arrest was unconscionable, humiliating and outrageous.

The Peruvian club accused the fans of attacking their staff member and then fabricating the accusation of racism.

Racist incidents have marred South American club soccer competitions in recent years, and many of these involve Brazilian fans being targeted by rival supporters, both home and away.

South American sports governing body CONMEBOL approved tougher penalties for those involved in racist acts in May last year, but this has not completely stopped.

Since February, South America’s main club competitions, the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, have generated 10 cases of racism, including Tuesdays. Nine of them have Brazilians as targets.

On Tuesday, CONMEBOL fined Paraguayan club Libertad $105,000 for a June 27 incident in which its fans racially abused Atletico Mineiros goalkeeper Everson.
