What’s next for the BBC as it continues its investigation into the allegations against the presenter

The BBC is continuing to investigate Huw Edwards, after police concluded there was no evidence of criminality in allegations he paid a youngster for explicit images.

Edwards’ wife Vicky Flind said he was in hospital with serious mental health issues the night she revealed he was the star at the center of the claims.

BBC Newsnight also reported other allegations, including that current and former employees received messages from the star that made them feel uneasy.

In the meantime, the BBC must now find a replacement presenter for News at Ten.

What’s going on with the BBC investigation?

On the night Edwards’ identity was revealed, a BBC spokesman said the broadcaster would continue its own internal investigation, ensuring due process and a thorough assessment of the facts.

The inquest is expected to examine whether Edwards’ conduct may have breached the terms of his contract or brought discredit to the BBC.

BBC Director General Tim Davie sent internal emails to all staff saying the organization would follow due process in the investigation and focus on its duty of care to everyone involved.

He asked anyone with information to forward it to an email address.

Mr Davie was asked how he responded to the allegations.

A former member of staff told me that he got his priorities wrong and that the situation wouldn’t have gone so badly if it had been handled properly in the first place.

Mr Davie said he did not speak directly to the presenter, but that it was his duty to balance privacy, duty of care and a very serious allegation and that the BBC had excellent processes to protect people.

BBC executives will appear in parliament next week

Mr Davie and other BBC executives will appear before MPs next week to answer questions about the Edwards fury.

BBC Acting Chairwoman Dame Elan Cross Stephens and Policy Director Clare Sumner will appear alongside the Director General before the Lords Communications Committee on Tuesday.

BBC reporters have looked into Edwards’ story themselves, including allegations that he sent threatening messages to a person in their 20s on a dating app that allegedly implied she would post publicly on the presenter.

The Newsnight team also flagged allegations of potential workplace wrongdoing, with the story claiming that Edwards messaged three young BBC staff, including one still with the organisation, who said the messages made them feel uncomfortable.

Will Edwards return to the BBC presentation?

Edwards’ ability to return to the News at Ten will depend on the outcome of the investigation. He may also take a long leave from the BBC or not fully return.

Katie Razzall, BBC Culture editor, said: He is in an internal process at the BBC, but without having seen the evidence which we cannot judge. It could end with a reprimand. It could end in dismissal. This could end with a reputation rehabilitation.

The company will need to find a replacement for the flagship role of News at Ten presenter.

Who could replace Edwards?

The Times reported that sources believe Clive Myrie or Fiona Bruce are the current favorites to succeed him.
