Cyprus backs Iranian Mossad murder plot allegation

An Iranian plot to target Israelis in the eastern Mediterranean island nation is supported by a police investigation in Cyprus, according to Israel’s Mossad.

A Cypriot security officer told The Associated Press in an apparent hint to the Israeli intelligence agency that local authorities had received information from “friendly intelligence” pointing them to Iranian national Yusef Shahabazi Abbasalilu.

According to the Cypriot police investigation, there was a plan to assassinate Jews and Israelis, with at least one specific target on the list of victims.

The investigation revealed that Abbasalilu had established activities in the separatist Turkish northeast of the island, where he worked to enlist others in the plot.

Turkish Cyprus is only recognized by Ankara and the United Nations considers it an occupied part of the Greek Republic of Cyprus.

Abbasalilu was being pursued by Cypriot officials on the Greek side of the island when he crossed over to the Turkish side, where Turkish Cypriot authorities recognized him as a potential security danger and deported him to Iran.

Abbasalilu, who gave information that allowed Cypriot intelligence agencies to stop the attempt, was abducted in a covert operation inside Iranian territory, according to information released by the Mossad last month.

Abbasalilu confessed on camera under questioning that he was sent to Cyprus to harm Israeli businessmen.

“The Mossad was able to seize the mastermind of the terrorist cell in a unique and risky mission inside Iranian territory, which then admitted [to the terror plot] in detail during his interrogation, leading to the exposure and dismantling of the Cypriot terrorist cell,” the Mossad claimed.

The attack was stopped by Cypriot authorities after receiving information from Mossad.

Abbasasulilu revealed that the member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence unit who sent him to Cyprus for the operation gave him the information on the target.

He had ties to a Pakistani organization that has committed assassinations in Cyprus in the past.

A senior Mossad official said, “We will catch any party that advocates terrorism against Jews and Israelis anywhere in the world, including on Iranian soil.”
