KCON USA responded to an openly racist job posting.
KCON is one of the biggest Hallyu-centric music festivals in the world. The hottest K-Pop artists headline annual international events with thousands of fans in attendance.

Like most major festivals, temporary workers are hired for the three-day event. Job websites, such as Backstage, which is also used for movies, TV shows, etc., are used.

So seeing a job opening for the upcoming KCON USA was no surprise. Still, the job description shocked and disappointed netizens, as it not only called for young women between the ages of 18 and 30, but also Asian, White/European ethnicity” as requirements.

This isn’t the first time KCON USA has posted a similar post. Yet last year the ethnicity and gender requirements were broader.

It would make sense if it was an acting role because one would be playing a specific character that is common to see on Backstage. Still, none of this should matter to an average event staff position.

Netizens found the KCON USA job posting alarming and racist. Thus, it made many uncomfortable to attend the event if it was based on discriminatory policies. Additionally, some even pointed to legal issues, citing different acts that KCON USA’s job description violated.

Hours later, KCON USA responded to the criticism via its official social media accounts. KCON USA had neither authorized nor approved the posting. Additionally, KCON USA emphasized that diversity and inclusivity have always been at the heart of its concerns, so it “strongly speaks out” against racism.

However, netizens remained skeptical. Some thought KCON USA only tackled it once it went viral.
