Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday decided to sue Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan for accusing neighborhood and village volunteers of trafficking women in the state.
Special Chief Secretary Ajay Jain has issued a government order (GO) to file a case against the actor-turned-politician in court.
“The government, after careful consideration of the case and in the exercise of its powers, hereby grants the sanction to the public prosecutor concerned to file a complaint in the competent court against the individual named Konidela Pawan Kalyan,” the order reads.
He relied on the powers conferred under section 199(4)(b) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, to impose the penalty.
It is pointed out that Pawan Kalyan made defamatory, derogatory and venomous statements against the volunteers during a public meeting in Eluru on 9 July.
Addressing a public meeting in Eluru, he alleged that nearly 30,000 women have been trafficked from the southern state, made possible by the foot soldiers of the state government’s grassroots governance system, namely ward/village volunteers.
Claiming he is aware of intelligence from central agencies, the actor-politician said 30,000 women have disappeared from the state. “Only 14,000 missing women have managed to return, while about 16,000 women have yet to be found. I demand answers about the fate of the remaining women,” the Jana Sena leader said.
In addition, he claimed that volunteers convey information from each village to some ruling party leaders about who belongs to whom, how many people live in a family if the girls have fallen in love with someone, how many widows are there and other details. Information concerning single women in particular is taken into account.
“Some anti-social elements use this information to target women and traffic or entrap them,” Pawan Kalyan said at the previous meeting.
Following these allegations, the chairwoman of the state women’s commission, Vasireddy Padma, also issued a notice asking Kalyan to produce detailed evidence within 10 days.
